Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #220 - 211

The Greatest: Cat Power

That wasn't too long a wait, was it now? This time we're moving away from the bonafide pop superstars (for the most part), so no Britney. For now. Don't worry, she'll be back you crazy Britney fans.

#220 - Good Luck (2004)
by Basement Jaxx ft. Lisa Kekaula

You'll end up old and lonely,
If you don't get a bullet in your head...

Basement Jaxx established themselves as one of the biggest dance acts of the decade. This is their second entry (so far) in this countdown. It looks like they're going for a more 'back-to-basics' approach with their next release (e.g. the excellent 'Dracula'), so you can bet they're going to make their way onto next decade's countdown.

#219 - Ready For the Floor (2008)
by Hot Chip

I'm hoping perchance, you might take this dance...

Hot Chip have come a long way. 'Ready For the Floor' was the beginning of their rise to the top of the electronic heap and if their most recent material is anything to go by, it's going to be quite some time before they relinquish that position.

#218 - Trouble Sleeping (2003)
by The Perishers

Why's it always you and never me?
I've never cared too much about honesty...

The O.C. anyone?

#217 - Don't Know Why (2002)
by Norah Jones

When I saw the break of day,
I wished that I could fly away...

#216 - Earth Intruders (2007)
by Bjork

We are the earth intruders,
We are the sharp shooters...

Another 90s star that's kept up the goodness in the new millennium, it's Bjork! She's working hard on her next release and you know it's going to blow us all away. You don't know? Well now you do.

#215 - Funeral Dress (2009)
by William Fitzsimmons

Though the difference will probably be lost on me, anyway...

#214 - Runs In The Family (2008)
by Amanda Palmer

I say it runs in the family, this family that carries me to such great lengths,
To open my legs up to anyone who'll have me...

You get my love for Amanda Palmer, right? This is my favourite song from her solo catalogue... there's something about it that's kinda magical. The lyrics? It's like masterpiece theatre... for songwriting!

#213 - Painted By Numbers (2006)
by The Sounds

I couldn't act like you, but I can love like you do...

#212 - Woman (2006)
by Wolfmother

She's a woman, you know what I mean...

I'm going to be honest. Over time, I've learnt to hate this song. But, there was a lot of love for it when it came out and it made Wolfmother into stars. Then the dude with the 'fro went crazy and everyone quit and they released a second album that kinda passed us by. Circle of life. Or something.

#211 - The Greatest (2006)
by Cat Power

Once I wanted to be the greatest...

Dear Chan, you'd be the greatest if you released a new album this year. Thanks.

That's it for today. Tomorrow we'll be a third of the way through the countdown. Which means it's only going to get better. And it's already been amazing. So what's better than amazing? I don't know... you tell me.

  1. Ahhh basement jaxx appears again. They could do no wrong in the 2000's. Except perform at future music festival. Very average. Year I went there.

Love it or hate it? Agree or disagree? Let me know what you think!
