The K-Tizzle Sizzle - There's a fine line between pleasure and pain

There's a fine line between pleasure and pain
by Katie Langley

I’ve never been hung up on being hip or cool. I like the music that I like and make no apologies. If it’s novelty, daggy, trashy or just really really shit, the odds are that I am going to find it entertaining. Coincidentally I completed a strengths based character assessment at work recently which revealed that humour is my top strength. This must be the reason why I find myself loving every whacky song that goes viral and singing along to all the words. I find these songs amusing, but also know that they irk people. That only adds to my joy.

This week I decided to take a little trip down memory lane to look at some viral tunes. P.S. You’re welcome.

'Macarena' - Los del Rio

People like to pretend that they don’t know the dance moves to the Macarena, but the reality is that after a few drinks autopilot kicks in, and your arms and hips start moving involuntarily. I must admit that I’m not really sure what the lyrics are. I tend to mumble and then scream “HEY MACARENA!”.

'Crazy Frog' - Axel F

This “song” is like nails on a chalk board. But that’s the beauty of it. I can remember once challenging my sister to listen to it for 30 minutes on repeat to see who could crack first. The secret is to embrace that hi-pitched noise, and just belt it out as loud as you can. Go with it. Don’t fight it. As a matter of interest, we both made it through the 30 minute challenge. What kind of sick idiots are we?

'Friday' - Rebecca Black

Is it just me, or do you find yourself singing “Friday, Friday, getting down on Friday” every Friday? No? It’s just me? Awkward. This is one of those songs that is so bad that it’s brilliant. The auto tuning, budget film clip and lyrical genius all add to the appeal. I do also quite enjoy the death metal rendition.

'Gangnam Style' - PSY

I really do love this song. But I think I love the dancing more. Some of you might remember that my sister and I developed what we called “Gangnam Style Pilates”. It basically involves using a resistance band while trying to do the dance moves. Again I ask, what kind of sick idiots are we?

'The Fox' - Ylvis

This song is still gaining momentum, and hasn’t yet reached its full viral strength. But it’s coming. Oh, it’s coming. This song attempts to answer a very important question – what sound does a fox make? According to this song elephant’s make a “toot” noise and fish go “blub”. Very educational.
