The K-Tizzle Sizzle - Hello!

Is it me you're looking for?
by Katie Langley

It’s finally happened – I have a stalker. Although, it’s possible there has only been one single stalking event. In order to classify someone as a stalker, does it need to be repeated? Maybe we could just say that I was stalked.

Someone from my past, who I haven’t spoken with in a while, popped up via email to tell me that they had “stumbled across this interview with you”. Stumble, really? I think what happened is that you Googled me. Why were you Googling me? Do you Google everyone? Am I over thinking this? Does everyone do it? Should you tell people? Or keep it secret?

You know who you are, stalker. If you are reading this… Hello. Thanks for stumbling by! Yes, my curtains are closed.

On that note, let’s take a look at some songs that might be boarding on stalker-ish.

'Every Breath You Take' - The Police

“Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you”

Sting himself has revealed that this song is about an ex-lover, and the jealousy and surveillance that followed. Quite frankly I couldn't wait to get as far away from my ex-boyfriend as possible.

'My Bloody Valentine' - Good Charlotte

“He dropped you off, I followed him home
Then I, I stood outside his bedroom window
Standing over him, he begged me not to do
What I knew I had to do cause I'm so in love with you”

I don’t think I’m ever going to look at those Madden boys the same again. The lyrics I've sampled don't really make it clear that a murder is about to take place. It just sounds like there's a bit of fun boy on boy time.

'Hey There Delilah' - Plain White T's

“Hey there Delilah
I've got so much left to say
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away
I'd write it all
Even more in love with me you'd fall
We'd have it all”

The story is that the Plain White T’s lead singer met Delilah at a party. One time. Part of me thinks this is really sweet. The other part of me remembers all of the idiots I've met at parties and how if one of them wrote me a song like this I'd call the Police.

'Stan' - Eminem

“I hope you know I ripped all of your pictures off the wall
I love you Slim, we coulda been together, think about it
You ruined it now, I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it
And when you dream I hope you can't sleep and you scream about it
I hope your conscience eats at you and you can't breathe without me”

Poor Marshall Mathers. This is stalking to the extreme.

'I Knew I Loved You' - Savage Garden

“I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life”

Wait… You knew you loved me before you met me? How does that work exactly? Thanks? I think.

  1. I have always thought the Turtles "Happy Together" was a bit stalkerish. Picture a guy in a straight jacket in a psyche ward, phone under chin (cos he can't use his hands obviously) singing this "Imagine me and you. I do. I think about you day and night. It's only right. To think about the girl you love. And hold her tight. So happy together. I CANT SEE ME LOVING NO BODY BUT YOU FOR ALL MY LIFE!!!!" I should have been a movie director ;-) - Lou.

Love it or hate it? Agree or disagree? Let me know what you think!
