Song Review - Undone

by Lincoln (available on itunes)
EP: Visions Of A Fading Light (available soon, I hope!)

Music; it's such a complex beast and yet so very, very simple. Sometimes it is just played, sometimes it is just listened to and sometimes it inspires a whole thought pattern about things. If we look at the actual definition, it goes something along the lines of 'vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony...' it could go on for ages.

While that little definition says something, it doesn't say everything. In fact, it only says a tiny little bit. It doesn't describe the feeling I got of my stomach in my throat when I heard the first quiet keyboard notes of 'Undone', the debut single from Sydney based artist Lincoln, and it doesn't describe the wonder racing through my brain as the beats begin. That definition doesn't describe the wave of "yes!" I felt as everything turned from light and airy and dragged me into a darkness and doom with intense synths that I delight in bathing in with each listen and that simple definition doesn't do justice to the sense of satisfaction at the lyrics about breathing and breathing you in, which is exactly how I feel about the song in itself. That definition doesn't describe the absolute need to know exactly who Lincoln is, how they managed to release such an incredibly strong debut and it doesn't describe the want to declare myself a fan of an artist so early on and the desperate desire to hear more.

Music; it's a very complex beast, but perhaps what's complex is not music itself, but everything that surrounds it, because really, there's nothing complex about falling totally in love with a song. Doing that is very, very simple and it's one of the best things in the world.

Jo Michelmore gives 'Undone' four Ellie Goulding heads out of five...
