The K-Tizzle Sizzle - The Kids Are Alright

The Kids Are Alright
by Katie Langley

We established in a K-Tizzle Sizzle not too long ago that I’m not an authority when it comes to children. In fact, I’m blissfully unaware of most kid related facts and have decided that I’ll come to grips with it when and if I need to. However, I found myself sitting in the latest Tom Cruise action movie over the weekend (stop judging me) wondering if it was really appropriate for kids under 10. Some might question the appropriateness of Tom Cruise for anyone, of any age. That's a question for a different time and place.

At a Lady Gaga concert a couple of years ago (stop judging me), nestled in between a group of parents and their kids, I couldn’t help but wonder the same thing (age appropriateness, not Tom Cruise) as Gaga screamed “I wanna see your cocks, Brisbane!” and was later birthed out of a giant, inflatable vagina. As you do.

Lady Gaga: she was born that way.

Are kids exposed to worse? How soon is too soon? Will someone please think of the kids? Are the kids really alright? The Who think they are. They Offspring disagree. Have I forgotten what it’s like to be a kid? Does this now make me, groan, old? I think it might.

As I think about my own concert ‘firsts’ I can remember witnessing a drug deal (allegedly) backstage at The Offspring gig, and copping a bloody nose from a crowd surfer in the mosh pit watching The Living End.  I can recall eagerly over-sharing all of these details with my Dad, who was waiting to collect me after both concerts. Rather than forbid me to attend any more rock shows, he asked me lots of questions and it started an open conversation between us. At times I'm sure he didn't like what he was hearing, but we were able to talk about things I had heard or seen and build up a level of trust.

How long can we really keep kids in a bubble? In a world where tween heartthrobs like Rhianna and Miley Cyrus proudly share their drug habits all over social media, I’m not sure it’s for very long at all.
